THE DANGERS OF SHORT FORM SPELLINGS

I just want to share my experience during one exams I sat for some years back. Ordinarily I have always seen nothing wrong with chatting or send text messages with the help of short forms spelling, and by short form spellings I meant; for instance the word "the" being substituted for "d" or "how" for "hw". At first it seemed convenient and kind of helps in quicker response time especially during chats. Now there I was in the exam hall scratching my head for the same spelling of the word "the".....
I wrote "de","d" and funny enough it never really occurred to me that I could quickly check through the question papers for the correct spelling. It took me quite some time before I could finally get the correct spelling.
It may be cool and convenient but check through the write ups of younger ones especially here in Nigeria and you will be shocked at how much we have taken the social media form of writing into formal and corporate office.

It's funny to think we might overlook these things ... On a similar note I find speaking online with the mums from my children's school very difficult in WhatsApp they shorten everything or use solo letters and its tough enough translating from Spanish without the k to qué to what etc

Maybe we could start a thread of some online terms in our native languages...?

I have the same experience, though not in an exam. Since I usually write correspondences in my work, there is this one time when I already printed the letter but when I read it again, I have noticed that instead of "you" i have written "u". It's a good thing that I was able to edit the letter before I submitted it. :)
