Dementia and Alzheimer - I sometimes wonder if it's true, specially when I suddenly forget a word and get stuck for few seconds :D Starting to just speak out loud same word in 2-4 other languages to see if somebody gets me or to trigger the X word in needed language.
Yes, I feel retarded in that moments :)

On a side note: Nowadays world got so inter connected, people learn languages for trips and business, and yes, you can find Chinese investments all over the world. Maybe Mandarin is a good idea :)
Mostly online resources, some of which were already mentioned:
- TV programs, series, movies. There are for xample English movies with French subtitles on YT :)
- Youtube: now there is such abundance of free lessons over there
- Music: sometimes you can find sth really interesting for yourself, start listening, singing and learn more
- News programs: both text and video ones
Hardcore: literature in local library ;)
Japanese - because I find the English translations sometimes odd and hard to understand :P
Russian - neighbor language with a lot of common history and def interesting things to share, once you understand them (achieved) :)

Yeah, there is this bad rap about German. Partially makes sense, as it sounds weird to other language groups.
In Poland, as an example, we say that even a prayer sounds like cursing :)
Or that if you want to properly speak German, you should shout it ;) (to make it more catastrophic I guess).
On the other note - I have heard many nice German words and dialects and it wasn't harsh or ugly at all. I think it depends and in the end it's a language as all others :)

Ok, so let me start with (probably) the least expected language - Slovene :) / Slovenian.
Since I moved here and tried to live, I needed to learn it fast and it was a bit of a problem, despite being a Slavic language and me being Polish. Btw. if you were not sure were to go for beautiful vacation and still be in Europe - you just found Slovenia! Just google it ;)
PONS - it's working well with many langs, but I have to praise them for good job here:

I think they differ a bit on phone and in browser PC, but are both very nicely done. Give it a try.
What about Memrise? I used to use it a lot and actually liked it more than Duolingo.
I remember there funny approach to memes - you can choose own that resembles the word / sentence or create and upload your own :)
Or live in the country where the language is spoken :) Visit, travel through, get vacation, a project/program - anything, just to be there couple of weeks.
When I studied Russian for 2 years I was basically talking...but it wasn't really conversational and I couldn't get a sometimes what natives were saying. When I had a semester in Moscow (4months) - I almost became fluent (with slang, hearing places of origin) and made C1 certificate...
It was like day and night. I had to learn quick and survive :D
It's true Duolingo is demanding, but hey, if you make it your habit and use it every single day for 20-30 minutes, you will learn sth and it will stay with you!
Good thing - the comments section, there are really knowledgeable persons there able to answer and guide you though a language problem.

Yes, once you "Think in the language", talk to yourself in it and don't have to build sentences even for a moment - basically, you speak without hesitation on nearly any given topic - that's what I consider fluent :)
Unfortunately, brain is like muscle and languages are too, if you don't stretch it / use it - the fluency fades away... :)
